The Hockaday Museum of
Art focuses on the art of Montana and Montana artists with an emphasis on
the art of Glacier National Park. The Museum maintains a permanent
collection and offers rotating exhibits of works by nationally renowned and
emerging artists. Children will enjoy a Discovery Gallery with hands-on
activities that change along with the exhibits.
Six galleries exhibit
historic and contemporary work by Montana artists, and the Off the Wall Gift
Gallery gift shop features unique gifts created by local artists.
A popular three-day "Arts in the Park" festival is held the fourth weekend
in July each year in Kalispells Depot Park. The festival is the largest art
and music festival in Northwest Montana.
The Museums Glacier National Park Exhibition Gallery focuses on the
painters, photographers, authors, sculptors and collectibles of Glacier
National Park, both past and present. This permanent exhibition will always
feature the rich art history of the Park, though the artists change from
time to time. The exhibition includes the work of Marshall Noice, T.J.
Hileman, John Clarke, John Fery, Ace Powell, Robert M. Stephens, Leonard
Lopp, and other early and contemporary artists of the Park. The Museums
growing permanent collection focuses on the art and artists of Montana.
Featured in the permanent collection are works by Bud Helbig, Russell
Chatham, Jeanne Hamilton, Hugh Hockaday, Frank Hagel, Leonard Lopp, Ace
Powell, Gary Schildt, Tom Saubert and others.
Located in a historic Carnegie Library in Kalispell, the museum is just
minutes away from many scenic and recreational attractions. The Flathead
Valley is a scenic area reaching from Glacier National Park to the Flathead
Lake, and bordered by numerous national forests and the Bob Marshall,
Mission, and Great Bear Wilderness areas. Much of the region holds a
year-round appeal for outdoor enthusiasts and sportsman, while the Big
Mountain and Blacktail Ski Resorts attract tourists and vacationers for
winter sports like skiing and snowboarding.
The Hockaday Museum of Art was founded in 1968 by the Flathead Valley Art
Association and was named for Hugh Hockaday (1892-1968), a well-loved local
citizen, artist and teacher. The museum building was constructed in 1903 and
served as the county library for many years. It was placed on National
Register of Historic Places in 1996.
